Melissa Turkal, DNP, PMHNP-BC
Doctor of Nurse Practice, Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Dr. Melissa Turkal is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. With over two decades in the health care profession, she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Robert Morris University. She has twice been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing.
Her doctoral research entitled "The Effect of a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Intervention on the Perceived Stress and Burnout of RN Students Completing a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree" was published in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice. Dr. Turkal presented her original research to the Pittsburgh Psychiatric Society and was a podium speaker at the Greater Pittsburgh Nursing Research Conference in 2017.
Dr. Turkal welcomes all new patients over age 10, and has particular expertise in treating post traumatic and complex stress, mood disorders, and psychotic disorders. She is also experienced in forensics. She regularly guest lectures about the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic disorders at Robert Morris University and acts as a preceptor for students studying to become Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners.
She believes that in order to heal, patients need to feel seen, heard, and valued. Her goal is to always treat her patients fairly, justly, competently, and without judgment.
